Yamaha Music Co was founded in 1887 as an organ manufacturer and today produces professional grade audio equipment, pianos, brass, wind, and string instruments. Yamaha Motor Co (YMC) was started in 1955 and has been in continual operation since its first production model, the YA-1 motorcycle. Today, Yamaha is a global producer of motorcycles, wheelchairs, electric bicycles, swimming pools, helicopters, and surface mounter intelligent machinery. US production consists of boats, personal watercraft, golf cars, ATVs, and side by sides. Also, known for its engineering, YMC has designed and built engines for Toyota, Lexus, and Ford. Yamaha Motor US (YMUS) is the exclusive distributor for YMC in the United States. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of YMC and was formed in 1977. YMUS introduced golf cars one year later in 1978. Yamaha sold its first ATV in 1980 with the first side by side (SXS) arriving in 2004.
